Kaolinitic clays as a potential source of dioxins in the Noosa River catchment, Queensland, Australia

چکیده

Environmental context Dioxins have been found along the east coast of Australia in agricultural areas where there is no obvious source dioxins. These dioxins an unusual signature that does not match common industrial sources, but it has suggested they may be associated with pesticide use. This study a strong correlation between this unique and amount kaolinitic clay sediments sampled. Abstract The presence, concentrations profiles 2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) sediment were investigated aim determining whether dioxin-like compounds present and, if found, likely could deduced. sampled catchment lies within area high conservation value. Sediments from seven lake sites as possible sinks for any contamination historical PCDD/Fs measured all sediments. congener profile was dominated by octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) furans at or below limit detection, clays around world. A significant total dioxin concentration percentage lack PCDD/F indicates pesticides pentachlorophenol (PCP) are unlikely to catchment. Further, OCDD tended higher than those outside area, even though, overall, had less use other intensive previously studied. results presented paper indicate caution should taken when attributing presence soil anthropogenic sources.

Fine-suspended sediment and water budgets for a large, seasonally dry tropical catchment: Burdekin River catchment, Queensland, Australia

The Burdekin River catchment ( 130,400 km) is a seasonally dry tropical catchment located in north-east Queensland, Australia. It is the single largest source of suspended sediment to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Fine sediments are a threat to ecosystems on the GBR where they contribute to elevated turbidity (reduced light), sedimentation stress, and potential impacts from the associated nutri...

A multi-criteria approach to Great Barrier Reef catchment (Queensland, Australia) diffuse-source pollution problem.

This paper presents a multi-criteria based tool for assessing the relative impact of diffuse-source pollution to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) from the river basins draining into the GBR lagoon. The assessment integrates biophysical and ecological data of water quality and pollutant concentrations with socio-economic information pertaining to non-point source pollution and (potential) pollutant ...

A New Method for Estimating Flow Duration Curves : an Application to the Burdekin River Catchment, North Queensland, Australia

This paper presents a new method of representing flow duration curves (FDC) using a logarithmic transformation. The FDC has been defined using two parameters – the ‘cease to flow’ point, and the slope of the FDC. This method for defining the FDC has been applied to 23 sub-catchments of the Burdekin River in North Queensland, Australia. The two parameters defining the FDC have been related to th...
